Roofing Material Estimating
Deciding to have your roof replaced? The average age of 3 tab asphalt shingles is
approximately 16-20 years depending on your location, attic ventilation, installation,
and the quality of the roofing materials used.
To estimate the roof covering of your home multiply the total square footage
(including storage rooms and garages) of the first floor of your home and multiply by
the following factors to allow for the pitch.
- Roof pitch between 1/12 and 3/13 multiply your square footage by 1.03
- Roof pitch between 4/12 and 7/12 multiply your square footage by 1.12
- Roof pitch between 8/12 and 12/12 multiply your square footage by 1.45
Roofing material and labor is measured by the square. One square of roofing
material covers 100 square feet of roof area. The material is sold by the bundle.
There are 3 bundles in one square. So one bundle of roofing covers 33 1/3 Sq. Ft.
Add 10% to allow for waste, hips, ridges and valleys.
Example: 2000 Sq. Ft. Home with a 6/12 pitch
2000 X 1.12 = 2240 Sq. Ft. To cover
2240 / 100 = 22 2/3 squares (round to the nearest square)
22.66 * 10% = 2 1/3 square added for waste
Total Roofing Materials needed = 22 2/3 + 2 1/3 = 25 Square
